Alongside Studios Inc. (Alongside Studios Inc., we, us, or our) operates the BibleGuessr mobile application, website, and related services (collectively, the Service). This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use and disclose it, and the choices available to you.
1. Information We Collect
Information you provide
- Account information: your email address, account identifier, authentication information, and sign-in provider. If you use Google Sign-In, Google supplies your email address and profile image. BibleGuessr automatically uses that image as your initial profile avatar, which may appear on leaderboards as described in Section 3.
- Sign in with Apple: if you choose this option, we receive an Apple account identifier, authentication information, and the email address Apple makes available to us. If you choose Hide My Email, this can be an Apple private relay address instead of your personal email address. We use this information to create or locate your BibleGuessr account and authenticate you. Apple does not supply a profile photo through this sign-in option.
- Profile information: the username you choose and your profile photo, which may be supplied by Google or selected by you in BibleGuessr.
- Gameplay and preferences: your guesses, correct references, scores, distances, game modes, play dates and times, daily verse goal, and marathon results. We use these records to calculate information such as streaks, journal progress, and milestones.
- Communications: information you include when contacting support or voluntarily submitting a feedback form.
Information collected through the app and our providers
- Subscription information: RevenueCat creates or uses a subscription identifier to manage purchases. After you sign in, BibleGuessr sends your BibleGuessr account identifier to RevenueCat to associate your account with subscription entitlements and purchase information. We receive or access subscription status, entitlement, product, transaction, renewal, and purchase information through RevenueCat and your app store. We do not receive your full payment-card number.
- Product analytics: in versions of BibleGuessr where analytics is enabled, we use PostHog to collect app installation, update, opening, and background events; onboarding steps and sign-in methods; gameplay activity, scores, and results; journal and statistics interactions; and subscription-screen views, purchase attempts, cancellations, errors, and access changes. Events may include timestamps, product identifiers, app and operating-system information, device information, and an analytics identifier. Before sign-in, events can be associated with a randomly generated identifier. After sign-in, we associate analytics with your BibleGuessr account identifier and username; earlier onboarding or other activity may also become linked to your account. These records are not anonymous once linked to you. Versions without analytics enabled do not send these PostHog events.
- Device and notification information: your device timezone, push-notification permission status, and, if you enable notifications, an Expo push token associated with your account. To schedule and deliver reminders, we also process the date a reminder was last scheduled and notification records containing your account identifier, message body, and creation time. The message and push token are sent through Expo and the applicable Apple or Google push service for delivery.
- Technical information: our hosting, authentication, subscription, notification, and app-distribution providers may process information such as IP address, device type, operating system, app version, network activity, request logs, crash or error details, and security events when needed to provide and protect their services.
- Support diagnostics you choose to send: when you start an email from the app, BibleGuessr pre-populates your BibleGuessr user ID, platform, operating-system version, and app version. You can review or remove this information before sending the email.
Photos and camera access
If you choose a profile photo, BibleGuessr may ask for access to your camera or photo library. BibleGuessr receives the photo you select or take; the current picker does not upload other library photos. The selected image is cropped, resized, and compressed on your device, then uploaded to our storage provider. Camera and photo access are optional and can be changed in your device settings.
Information stored only on your device
BibleGuessr uses device storage to keep your authentication session securely, remember whether you dismissed the notification prompt, and temporarily save an onboarding guess and daily goal before account creation. This information may be removed when you sign out, complete onboarding, clear the app's data, or uninstall the app, depending on the item and your device.
When analytics is enabled, PostHog also uses device storage for analytics identifiers, settings, and events waiting to be sent. Those queued events are subsequently sent to PostHog when a connection is available; they are not information kept only on your device.
2. How We Use Information
We use personal information to:
- create, authenticate, maintain, and secure your account;
- provide gameplay, scoring, journals, streaks, progress, profiles, and leaderboards;
- process subscription access, purchases, restorations, and customer support;
- send streak reminders and other notifications you have enabled;
- personalize the Service, including using your timezone to schedule reminders at an appropriate local time;
- respond to support requests and feedback;
- troubleshoot errors, prevent fraud, cheating, abuse, and security incidents;
- maintain, analyze, and improve the performance and reliability of the Service; and
- comply with law, enforce our Terms of Service, and protect our rights and users.
We do not currently display third-party advertising or use personal information for cross-app behavioural advertising. We do not sell personal information for money.
When enabled, product analytics helps us understand where players encounter problems during onboarding, which game and journal features they use, and whether subscription and purchase flows work. We use it to evaluate and improve the Service. Signing out resets the app's analytics identity for subsequent activity; it does not delete events already collected.
3. Public Information and Leaderboards
Your chosen username, profile photo, and certain gameplay results may be visible to other signed-in players on leaderboards. If you register with Google Sign-In, BibleGuessr automatically uses the profile image supplied by Google as your initial avatar. Depending on the game mode, public results may include your score, rank, Bible-coverage total, perfect-guess total, or marathon record.
Profile images supplied by Google are hosted at Google-accessible URLs, and photos uploaded through BibleGuessr are stored at publicly accessible URLs so they can be displayed on leaderboards. A BibleGuessr-uploaded photo URL may contain a stable account identifier. Anyone with a photo URL may be able to view or copy the image outside the app. Do not connect or upload a photo, or choose a username, that contains information you want to keep private.
Other players' underlying guesses, email addresses, push tokens, and account records are not included in leaderboard responses.
4. When We Disclose Information
We disclose information only as described below:
- Service providers. Vendors process information for us to provide infrastructure, authentication, storage, subscriptions, payments, product analytics, notifications, distribution, support, and security.
- Other players and the public. We display the profile and leaderboard information described in Section 3.
- At your direction. We disclose information when you choose to connect to or interact with another service, submit a feedback form, send an email, or otherwise direct us to do so.
- Legal and safety reasons. We may disclose information if reasonably necessary to comply with law or legal process, enforce our agreements, investigate fraud or abuse, or protect the rights, property, and safety of Alongside Studios Inc., our users, or others.
- Business transfers. Information may be transferred as part of a merger, financing, reorganization, sale of assets, or similar transaction. Any recipient would be required to handle personal information consistently with applicable law and this Privacy Policy.
Our principal service providers include:
- Supabase for authentication, databases, and file storage;
- RevenueCat for subscription status and purchase management;
- PostHog for product analytics when enabled, including the account-linked activity described in Section 1;
- Expo for push-notification delivery;
- Apple for optional Sign in with Apple, including private email relay and revocation of sign-in authorization during account deletion;
- Google for optional Google Sign-In, Google Play services, and the optional Google Forms feedback form; and
- Apple and Google as app-distribution, purchase, payment, and push-notification providers on their respective platforms.
When providers process personal information on our behalf, their processing is governed by applicable agreements, provider terms, and law, including obligations concerning authorized processing and appropriate protection of personal information. Apple, Google, and other services may also act independently when they provide an app store, sign-in method, payment service, form, or linked website; their own privacy policies and terms apply to that independent processing.
5. Third-Party Links
BibleGuessr links to third-party websites and apps, including YouVersion, app-store pages, and our feedback form. When you open a link, the third party may receive technical information ordinarily sent by your device or browser and will handle information under its own privacy policy. This Privacy Policy does not govern independent third-party services.
6. Legal Bases and Consent
Depending on where you live, we process personal information:
- to provide the Service and perform our agreement with you;
- with your consent, such as for optional notifications, camera or photo access, and optional profile information;
- for legitimate purposes such as securing, maintaining, and improving the Service, where those interests are not overridden by your rights; and
- to comply with legal obligations.
Where consent is required, you may withdraw it, subject to legal or contractual restrictions and reasonable notice. Withdrawing consent may prevent us from providing a feature that needs the information.
7. Retention and Deletion
We retain account, profile, gameplay, notification, subscription-related, and, when collected, analytics information while needed for the purposes described in this policy, including providing and improving the Service, maintaining legitimate business and security records, resolving disputes, enforcing agreements, and complying with law.
When information is no longer needed, we delete or de-identify it. Some information may remain temporarily in backups or be retained where required for fraud prevention, financial records, legal claims, or other legal obligations. App stores and independent providers retain purchase or account records under their own policies.
Delete your account in the app: open Settings → Account Settings → Delete account and follow the confirmation prompts. If you have not reached the main app, the Account button on the reviews screen before the subscription screen also opens Account Settings. Confirm using your username, or type DELETE if you have not chosen a username. If your account is connected to Apple, you may be asked to authenticate with Apple again so we can revoke BibleGuessr's Apple sign-in authorization. Successful deletion removes your BibleGuessr authentication account, profile, saved gameplay and notification records, and uploaded avatar from our active account systems. Account deletion is permanent.
Other deletion requests and assistance: if you cannot access the in-app controls, or want to request deletion of other personal information under our control, email [email protected]. We may need to verify your identity. The in-app deletion action does not automatically erase historical analytics held in PostHog or subscription records held in RevenueCat. Contact us to request deletion or de-identification of those records under our control. We will process verified requests in accordance with applicable law, subject to permitted or required retention. App stores and other providers may separately retain information for their own purposes under their policies.
Subscription cancellation is separate: deleting your account or uninstalling BibleGuessr does not cancel an app-store subscription. Use Manage Subscription in the deletion prompt or your app store's subscription settings to cancel; billing may otherwise continue.
You can remove device-local information by signing out where applicable, clearing BibleGuessr's app data, or uninstalling the app. You can withdraw notification permission or camera and photo access through your device settings.
8. Your Privacy Rights and Choices
Depending on your location, you may have the right to:
- request access to personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
- request deletion of personal information;
- withdraw consent or object to certain processing;
- ask about how we use and disclose personal information; and
- make a complaint to the applicable privacy regulator.
You can change your username and profile photo in the app. You can manage notification permission in device settings and manage subscriptions through your app store account. To exercise another privacy right, contact us using Section 14. We may ask for information needed to verify your identity and will respond as required by applicable law.
The app does not currently provide an analytics opt-out switch. To ask about analytics linked to your account, object to its use, or request deletion, contact [email protected]. Signing out or uninstalling the app does not erase analytics already received by our provider.
9. International Processing
Alongside Studios Inc. is based in Canada, but our service providers may process or store information in Canada, the United States, and other countries. As a result, information may be subject to the laws of a jurisdiction different from your own and may be accessible to courts, law-enforcement authorities, or regulators in that jurisdiction where legally required.
When PostHog analytics is enabled, our current configuration sends analytics to PostHog's United States service.
Personal information remains subject to the safeguards described in this Privacy Policy and applicable legal protections regardless of where it is processed. We take steps appropriate to the nature of the information and the provider's role when selecting and using providers in other countries.
10. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information. These include encrypted network connections, secure device storage for authentication sessions, access controls, and database rules intended to limit users to authorized information.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. We therefore cannot guarantee absolute security. Please use a strong, unique password and contact us if you believe your account or information has been compromised.
11. Children
BibleGuessr is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from a child under 13. A user who is under the age of majority where they live should use the Service only with permission from a parent or legal guardian.
If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information, contact us at [email protected]. We will investigate and delete the information where required.
12. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the Service, our practices, or legal requirements change. We will post the updated policy and revise the “Last updated” date. If changes are material, we will provide additional notice where reasonably practicable or legally required.
13. Questions and Complaints
Please contact us first with a privacy question or complaint so we can try to resolve it. You may also have the right to contact the privacy regulator where you live, including the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada where applicable.
